Thanksgiving for the Seed

This Thanksgiving may be useful in farming communities where there is a custom of blessing the “plough” (despite no-till agriculture!) or the seed.

Biblical references: Mark 4.26-29, John 12.20-25, Psalm 65

God, we thank you for the seed, harvested from an earlier crop, kept with care and foresight.

Thank you for the seed, packed with hidden life, bursting with potential.

Thank you for the seed,
set in damp soil,
ready to soften and split and die.

Thank you for the seed,
silent witness to the power of life,
green shoot reaching for the winter sun, ripening towards tomorrow’s bread, your gift of food for a hungry world.

God, bless all who sow,
and watch and wait,
and hope and pray,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
